Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard took the court at the Brisbane International on Thursday, squaring off against Rinky Hijikata with a quarterfinal berth on the line. The world No. 67 was looking to carry momentum from his opening-round victory over Tommy Paul, a tight three-set battle he won 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. For the second straight match, the Frenchman was pushed to a deciding third-set tiebreak. Powered by 29 aces, Mpetshi Perricard once again edged through a tense encounter, sealing a 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory in two hours and 13 minutes to book his place in the quarterfinals. The 22-year-old will next face Aleksandar Kovacevic—who eliminated both Nick Kyrgios and Cameron Norrie, for a spot in the semifinals of the Australian tournament. |
