Contrary to what one might assume, the French Open was not named after any tennis legend, or even a player. The official name of the tournament, Roland Garros, is that of a pioneering French aviator. Garros was the first person to fly solo over the Mediterranean Sea and a World War I hero known for his innovations in aerial combat. So, in 1928, France had to build a new stadium to defend their Davis Cup title, they named it Stade Roland Garros, and the national tournament eventually played on the stadium picked up the pilot’s name. |
