In the early 1950s, after visiting the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Jimmy Van Alen — president of the Newport Casino — and his wife Candy decided tennis needed its own hall of fame. With the historic Newport Casino threatened by demolition, they chose it as the ideal location. Van Alen convinced the United States Lawn Tennis Association to support the project, and the site became the National Lawn Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, later officially recognized by the International Tennis Federation in 1986.
