On this day, December 15, 1990, drama took center stage in the semi-finals of the inaugural Grand Slam Cup as Brad Gilbert outlasted David Wheaton in a five-set thriller, winning 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4. The match nearly boiled over at the end of the third set, when a heated exchange during a changeover brought the players to the brink of a physical confrontation. Tensions flared after the chair umpire overturned a crucial call, before the situation escalated further when Wheaton’s brother shouted at Gilbert from the stands. “It was in the heat of the moment, and we are playing for a lot of money,” Gilbert told The New York Times, pointing to the unusually large prize money on offer at the newly launched Grand Slam Cup.
