On November 2, 1986, the German star defeated Spanish qualifier Sergio Casal (ranked No. 100 in the world) with a score of 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 in the final. For the tournament’s debut edition, the organizers couldn’t have asked for a more high-profile champion. At the time, “Boom Boom” Becker was at the height of his fame and closing in on Ivan Lendl for the world No. 1 spot.
