On December 8, 1985, 19-year-old Stefan Edberg shocked the tennis world by taking down world No. 1 Ivan Lendl in the Australian Open semi-finals, edging through 6-7, 7-5, 6-1, 4-6, 9-7. Until that point, the young Swede had never advanced beyond a Grand Slam quarter-final and had even survived two match points earlier in the tournament during his fourth-round battle with Wally Masur (6-7, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-2). After the loss, Lendl — still without a Melbourne title — delivered a blistering press-conference critique of the event, dismissing it as a true major because it was still played on Kooyong’s grass courts.
